This is a tribute to one of my dearest friends,
whose son yesterday lost his battle with cancer.
Words fail me,
and I lack the strength even to reach out to her.
May no mother ever have to bear such unbearable sorrow.
The title of the verse has made me cry,
Because the loss of a child is every mother’s greatest fear.
A child grows stronger in his mother’s prayers
Than first in her womb, and later in this world here.
The first cry, first tear, first bruise, and first fall,
Each hurts the mother far more than all
Her child becomes her breaths, her sky,her sun,
Her all reasons to live gathered in one.
Even in her sleep, her lips softly pray
For her dear ones night and day.
All her smiles, all her tears,
All her strengths, all her weaknesses and struggles
Stem from and exist for her little one.
A sneeze, a cough, a trembling tone of her child,
Sends through her heart a chill unknown.
The care she renders to her tender flowers
Outshines the most dexterous gardeners.
Newborn, infant, grown, or tall,
To a mother, they are little still, all.
Time may age them, years may run,
But in her eyes, they remain her little ones.
All she prays is that when she bids adieu to the world,
Her children should be there to grieve for her.
Alas! God sometimes chooses apart
To take a fragment of a mother’s heart.
He seems so distant, harsh, and high
When He calls her child to His own sky,
Adorning heaven with what was hers,
Leaving behind grief that forever stirs.
Leaving behind an unhealable, ever-bleeding wound in her heart.
The wound no season can erase,
An ache time cannot replace.
The pain that will forever stay
Until He chooses the mother to be taken away.
She who once would gently warn
That even warm milk might burn.
Now helplessly stands before the flame,
An untimely pyre, a cruel decree,
A sight no mother should ever see.
All she is left with is an emptiness
Which no treasure in the world can fill,
And a question for the Creator of all—
Why her?
Why must she see the lifeless body
Of the one who was for her the most precious one?
Why did God give her that child as the greatest blessing
If He had decided to take him away?
